Small Racing Tips:

“Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance” – Mattia

Two days in advance – make sure you drink plenty of water, a gallon a day is best.  Make sure you get plenty of carbs – more than normal.  Stretch for 30 minutes, at least twice a day until the regatta.

One day in advance – check the weather patterns and forecast, and mentally prepare yourself for the conditions.  It would be nice to have all the boat parts in working order.

Morning of – Good breakfast – no pop tarts or donuts, WATER, Eat a banana for potassium as cramping preventative, Warm up is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL.  I don’t care if it is 102 outside.   Leave enough time to stretch for 30 minutes before you rig.  Rig your boat, then put your gear on.  (If it is cold outside, do not let yourself cool off between the time you warm-up and go sailing.)  Most people tend to under dress.  Always wear hiking pants, even if it is 2 knots.  If you are not sweating just a little bit on land, you are not dressed enough for sailing.  Put on more layers.

Rigging - Make your sure your upper and lower are aligned properly, otherwise you might break your mast.  Make sure the sail is aligned with the mast.  The block on your vang should almost be touching the boom at max ease. (I like to tie the tail ends of my Cunningham and vang together.  It is convenient for weather mark roundings).  Your hiking strap should be tight enough to where there is equal pressure on your calves and your hamstrings. Your dagger board bungee has a nasty habit of getting stuck in the Cunningham/vang assembly, so I use a small loop that is tied to the fairlead, to keep the bungee from fouling.  Where the main sheet feeds into the cockpit from the main block, I tied a daisy chain big enough for my hand to fit around (it helps for better grip when pumping).

On the Water – Get in tune with the conditions.  Find a partner to pace with/split tack.  Make sure you know where the wind is coming from and its pattern – puffs, shifts, etc.  Practice your tacks and gybes excessively.   If there is enough wind to hike, your sail should be set to where you can make it up the whole beat without taking one break/rest AKA droop hike.  Find a mark and practice roundings.  Practice timing yourself to the starting line.

Get a Good Start and Sail Your Best.
